Larry Horowitz has moved beyond his traditional practice as a plein air painter in his new body of work. Inspired by his home state of New York, the paintings include rare cityscapes as well as his trademark pastoral landscapes. In part I of our artist studio visits, Larry takes us to familiar places where he finds the most comfort.

My day to day routine during this pandemic hasn’t really changed. What is different during these difficult times is that I have struggled to leave behind the noises and disturbances of life to focus with greater intensity on my painterly voice. I am taking my time with each painting, letting it slowly unfold. One day I found myself staring at a blank canvas and laying down the first strokes of what revealed itself to be a NYC scene. I went with it and continued to do a series of them; my prayer for the city and what it is enduring at this moment. As well as the light and calm of my pastoral landscapes, the man-made canyons of the city have become my inspiration.
